Working on the Queer Natures project has been a wonderful opportunity to learn from and connect with artists, academics and communities that rethink the relationship between nature, queerness, and creative practice. Below is a list of projects and websites that we wanted to share, in the hope that you enjoy finding out more about them, too.
This is far from an exhaustive list. If you want to let us know about a project or practice, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
Pride in Nature
Pride in Nature is an impact and engagement project, based at the University of Surrey, which explores how we can make experiences of nature more inclusive for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ+) people. Check out their resources, which include A Pride in Nature Manifesto, created by Queer Nature team member Dr Chloe Asker!
Monkey Business
RTiiiKA’s amazing exhibition Monkey Business is about celebrating queerness in nature, while at the same time challenging the idea of “finding” our place in the world by looking to nature. As RTiiiKA writes: “Animals don’t exist to teach us how to live—our morality isn’t a monkey’s business; it’s ours to figure out.” RTiiiKA also works with academics and the charity sector on live illustrations of events and workshops. You can see some of this beautiful work and find out more here.
The Trans, Non-binary and Intersex Cycling Project
The TNBI Cycling Project is a collaboration between the University of Brighton, The Clare Project and zine-maker Lea Cooper. The project aims to better understand the benefits, facilitators and barriers to cycling for Trans, Non-binary and Intersex folk in and around Brighton & Hove. It is the first academic study to focus on TNBI experiences of utility and leisure cycling. Make sure to check out their beautiful zine Under Our Own Power.
Queer by Nature
Queer By Nature is an Edinburgh-based local community group run by and for queer people that like nature. They are a friendly group of queer people who care about the natural environment, who come together to spend time in nature, share knowledge and learn together. For more information, check them out on Instagram.
